The Strike Set is the Fukyugata Ni kata using just the upper body techniques, no movement, no kicks, from a horse stance.

I celebrated the end of the Project last night with a cake. Nothing says Kata like a strawberry tart.

While this kata doesn’t have the great background the others have had, this location is significant to my karate career.

This store front is where I did karate, the early years, and where I was tested for my Black Belt in 1994.

I practiced many katas on this walkway before class and today you get a little nostalgia with your kata.

Happy Sunday !

Finally made it to Pinan Nidan.

If I ever had to rank my Katas in enjoyment this would probably be last. “I get no rush from Pinan Nidan”. That’s a paraphrased quote from a sitcom, extra points if you can name the show.

But it’s done lake side at karate park, Jupiter, Florida.

To get the “rush” from this kata, I did it beside a lake known to have alligators and I have fresh meats under my gi. Figured if I survived the kata I would have lunch.

Nunchaku 1

Happy Chukin’ Friday !

I’ve been working on this kata for about a year. I had never had a nunchaku kata before, usually I just freestyled with the chuks.

Here’s some nunchaku 1 trivia.

This kata takes one minute, 30 seconds to complete, which is long for a kata. Typically they’re about 30 seconds long. To complete a set of 25 of these katas it takes me 40 minutes. This year I’ve performed 300 nunchaku 1 katas, about 8 straight hours of this kata alone.

FYI This is a question in the Larry Edition of Trivial Pursuit.

Plus, I included a picture of the my handcrafted nunchakus I made for this kata. I even used the Japanese method of braiding, called Kumihimo, to make the connecting para-cord.
